Judaea

This month we catch up with Judaea, an R&B artist whose music comes from a place of romance, reflection and lived experiences. Her songs explore love in all forms: self-love, love for others, love for her inspirations and her faith, and they carry an emotional weight that lasts.

Raised singing in church, Judaea was inspired by artists who lead with soul and intention, from Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder to Beyoncé and Tori Kelly. Her voice feels both timeless and personal, but music is only part of her creative language. As a songwriter, visual thinker and designer, she approaches each individual release as a full sensory experience, where sound, color, memory and feeling are inseparable. In the interview to follow, we discuss her inspirations, what keeps her grounded, and a future driven not by numbers, but by purpose, love and a lasting impact.

How would you describe your music for someone who’s listening to you for the first time? What words, emotions or feelings do you hope come to mind for them?

I’d describe my music as different expressions of my experiences with love. I’m a true romantic, and I like to stretch the idea of what romance can be, whether it’s self-love, love for a partner, or love for someone who’s inspired me. Love is what drives me, and I think when people listen to my music, they’ll naturally feel that emotion in one form or another

What was the moment you first realised you wanted to make music seriously, and what drew you to music to begin with?

I grew up singing in the church, but the moment I really knew I wanted to be a singer was one night watching American Idol with my family. We watched the entire season, and the season finale made me realize that I could actually go after my dreams to be a singer. My mother is also a great singer. I’ve watched her sing all my life. Seeing other artists master their craft only confirmed what I already felt, that I could do it too.

Who were the earliest artists, albums or songs that shaped your music taste, and have your influences changed over time?

My mom is subconsciously a part of my singing style. My inspirations are Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Usher, Celine Dion, Tori Kelly, Chris Brown, and the list could go on and on. My influences haven’t really changed, they’ve evolved. I still look to the same artists, but now I’m inspired by how they’ve grown, the new styles they create, and the way they push beyond a single genre. Their evolution motivates me to explore everything music has to offer. Nothing is off limits.

On your journey so far you’ve worn many hats (singer, songwriter, visual director, designer). How do those different creative outlets feed into your music?

Thank you so much for that! All of those things are an expression of me. The words in music are the way I tell the story through sound. When I’m creating, the vision sticks out and is just as present as the melody. Songs help you feel and see things that are not on screen but are universal. Songs create lasting memories that open up a dimension we sometimes don’t even realize we are in. It’s like this: When I’m writing a song, I think of how a topic made me feel, and what that day was like. When you take a moment to stop and breathe, what does the air feel like? Was the sun shining at that moment? Was there a smell that filled the air? Perfume or maybe the smell of fresh donuts from the bakery down the street. Who was talking to me, who did I see, or exchange words with? All of these things exist in your imagination when you hear a song. All these things you can see with your eyes closed. They create so much color without actually seeing it.

Songs come with unspoken visuals for every listener. Sometimes, as an artist, I see the vision before even having the words. Once all of that is on paper, then dressing up the vision is the fun part. I love designing sets and dressing up, coming up with looks and colors to match the vibe. I’m simply a creative in its complete nature.

With so many creative interests (music, design, content creation) how do you balance everything? Do you have a routine or structure to help keep you grounded?

Yes! It can definitely get overwhelming. That’s why I create separate schedules for music creation and content creation. I map out which days I should focus on each task, because trying to do everything at once is too stressful. So far, the system has been working really well. Even for posting content, I follow a schedule—each category has its own day. Wednesdays and Fridays are my “post music” days!

When you’re not making music or creating content what do you do to recharge?

Go to the spa when I can, praying, and hanging out with people that I love. On the regular, I work out to help with stress and keep myself motivated. It’s something about pumping iron that reassures you, “I can do this, I CAN DO ANYTHING”!

Collaboration often plays a big role for artists. Who have been your favourite collaborators? Are there any dream collaborators you’re hoping to work with in the future?

I love a good collaboration. Lately, my collabs have been with writers. My two favorites right now are Felly and Ant Clemons. They are legends in the making, and I’m just happy to work with them! I hope to collab with Victoria Monet, Teyona Taylor, Lecrea, Beyonce, of course, Tori Kelly, Usher, Tank, Chris Brown, Jhene AIko, Sevyn Streeter, and so many more!

As an artist writing and releasing music independently, what have been the biggest challenges and biggest rewards on the journey so far?

The biggest reward is just seeing people love my creation. When they reach out and tell me how the song has touched them fills my heart, and that’s what it’s all about, sharing my blessing with others so they can be blessed too.

The biggest challenge is getting over myself and withholding music because of my own fears. Another challenge is tuning out the noise of what everyone thinks you should do vs what you REALLY want to do. The other challenge is learning the business and trying to be successful in an industry full of vultures. Some business people truly want to see you succeed and help you do that; others are scammers, and unfortunately, sometimes you don’t know that until after dealing with them.

If you could change anything about the music industry or the path of an independent artist like yourself, what would that be?

I would change today’s notion to go after numbers and let real talent shine again. I miss the era where music was soul-touching because you had to have IT to even be considered. Now “IT” is money or numbers. It fills the industry with filth.

Where do you see yourself artistically in five years?

I see myself winning a Grammy, writing the songs of my dreams, collaborating with people I could only reach while I’m physically dreaming lol. I see myself established in some of the businesses I’ve invested in, like Home Care and Trucking, where I will be financially stable enough to really help people in the ways that God sees fit. I see myself on screen acting in a major role involving TV, theatre, and movies! I see myself having many brand deals that align with my spirit and message. I can see it all, and it’s all coming for me. And most importantly, I see myself surrounded by love and my family, having more children, and sharing the beauty of a healthy marriage. I see fullness in life!

What is next for Judaea?

I am currently in a Christmas Play, “A Christmas Carol ReImagined”! I will be releasing a new song in the new year, and I have more screen time coming out with a new show that I appear on!

You can find Judaea on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
